There’s something romantic and regal about the cosmos; the language of the sky and the movement of the stars. My grandmother was the person to light the pilot light of my love of the sky and the constellations there in. To be honest, I was surprised she knew about the stars.
One night outside my childhood home when I was ten, she pointed out her constellation of the Bull, the animal that represents her astrological sign, was primed for easy viewing with the cluster of Pleiades, the universal story of the Seven Sisters.
This story is told worldwide by various cultures by different names. I’m not writing to get into the myth today - due to the nature of the story, this isn’t the place for it - however, there is a correlation to our universal experience.

We share the sky, and whether or not we proactively make use of the language, it is innate and ancestral. Often beyond the language we have words for.
From Harriet Tubman following the North Star (Polaris) along the Underground Railroad to the Wise Men looking for Jesus in Palestine to the Dogon Tribe in revering the Dog Star (Sirius) as their central focal point in agriculture and spirituality to the countless tribes in Mesoamerica creating ethnoastronomical tools (architecture used to measure time), Indigenous cultures have cultivated and thrived using these ancient systems. Don’t let systems of oppression steer you away from what is universal.
Uranus is a star player in this New Moon Eclipse confirming your presence on this earth is indeed Divined. Only you can know what you’ve come here to be. Use your story to shine the light on the goodness and the shame that needs the light to shrink.
My work increases the sovereignty in the lives of people of African descent and by overflow, everyone else I come into contact with, because my effervescence, when turned on, is contagious. The nature of Black culture is to be filled with creativity, possibility, wanderlust, imagination, sensuality, elasticity and levity. To have access to the sky and the stars is one thing. To find the right interpreter is another.
I’m not a football fan. Nor am I a bandwagoner for the Super Bowl. That said, I’ll do a rewatch on YouTube the next day. There was something about the ASL interpreter that struck me. The fact that she was a LSPR interpreter, a version of sign language that includes Spanish, signs and features that are unique to Puerto Rico - not my home country, but my heart was so happy to feel it. I felt represented in a language that was not my mother tongue and nor did I understand, but I felt it.
It made me reflect on my work of tapping into and speaking an ancient language of the universe. Astrology is sacred and should be treated as such.
I have returned to a place of joy and reverence about my work, how futuristic and innovative it is.
There continues to be an underestimated importance of the use of ancient languages like astrology and astronomy in the liberation and sovereignty of the African diaspora. Benjamin Banneker, triple Scorpio, mathematician and inventor of the Farmer’s Almanac; Harriet Tubman who used the stars to navigate her path to freedom & said “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves"; and the Dogon Tribe who knew of the existence of stars unable to be seen without manmade technology, have been my ancestral teachers. Now I have learned to see in the dark and freed myself.
